Upset Brewing?

December 5th, 2009 | by brooksbusch |

Last weekend I predicted that the Indianapolis Colts would fall to the Houston Texans, and for a single half it looked as if my prediction would be correct. However, in Colts fashion, are boys in blue stormed back from a 17 point deficit to improve to a perfect 11-0 on the season. The Colts struggled to stop the Texans in the first half, and interceptions from Peyton Manning once again slowed down this potent offense. But when it mattered the most the Colts were able to respond, and finished a hard fought game with a fantastic fourth quarter. This Sunday the Colts will once again face a tough AFC South opponent, and just like the Texans the Tennessee Titans will be looking to keep their playoff hopes alive.

The Titans come into Indianapolis this Sunday on a five game winning streak, and are playing some of the best football in the NFL. Vince Young has helped to rejuvenate a once stagnant Titans offense, and Chris Johnson is establishing himself as one of the premier players in the NFL. With the explosion of Chris Johnson it could prove to be a long Sunday for the Colts if they struggle to stop the run. This season the Colts are surrendering 109 rushing yards per game on defense, and the Titans are averaging 168 rushing yards per game on offense. It is clear that the Titans will come into Indianapolis looking to run the football. However, if the Colts can slow down Johnson and force Vince Young to beat them through the air, then the Colts should be in good shape to extend their winning streak to 12 games.

The Titans and Colts have two of the longest winning streaks in the NFL at this point in the season, but come Sunday one team will begin a new streak. Peyton Manning has struggled as of late, throwing seven interceptions in his last four games, and he will have to be more efficient against a possession team like the Titans. Sunday’s game will come down to the how well the Colts can contain Chris Johnson and whether or not Manning will be able to cut down on his turnovers. Clearly the Titans will be coming to town looking for an upset, but the Indianapolis Colts will do everything in their power to once again play the role of spoiler.
