True Test for Caldwell

November 6th, 2009 | by brooksbusch |

Jim Caldwell is off to a fantastic start in his first year as head coach for the Indianapolis Colts. However, with the recent string of injuries the first year head coach faces the challenge of keeping this team together, and, more importantly, keeping the hope of a second Super Bowl alive. Caldwell has done a very effective job filling the void left by Tony Dungy thus far into his young career leading the Colts to a 7-0 record. And as his predecessor Dungy had to do many times throughout his career, Caldwell must find a way to keep this team moving in the right direction. The remainder of this season will help reveal how good of a coach Caldwell can be in this league, but he will not be alone in being the foundation of strength for this team.

This Colts team is led by several experienced veterans that should be able to keep the ship headed in the right direction. Players like Peyton Manning, Jeff Saturday, Reggie Wayne, Robert Mathis, and Gary Brackett have proven their leadership abilities year after year here in Indianapolis, and have provided a strong foundation for one of the most successful franchises in the past decade. With a loyal fan base fully behind the Colts and coach Caldwell I expect the Colts to be just fine, and once again win 12 games or more. However, with the lack of depth in the secondary, I also expect the Colts to struggle mightily against strong opposing pass offenses.

Let’s see if Caldwell can fill the shoes left by Dungy.
